"This is an important step for the protection of the world’s rainforests", says Toerris Jaeger, Executive Director of Rainforest Foundation Norway.

"We are very happy that the rainforest investment is being extended. This is Norway's most important international contribution to both climate and nature, and the government thereby confirms Norway's central role in efforts for the rainforest", says Toerris Jaeger, Executive Director of the Rainforest Foundation Norway.

The announcement also specified that Norway’s contribution will continue at 4 billion NOK (380 mill USD) after its 30 percent increase in 2024.

The Norwegian rainforest initiative has produced very good results, with a sharp reduction in deforestation in key rainforest countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia. At the same time, there is a great need for more support. The Amazon is experiencing horrendous forest fires and drought largely caused by deforestation.

The global nature summit COP16 starts in Colombia in one month. A vital question is how Western countries can upscale finance for biodiversity protection.

"We need other countries to follow Norway in providing new funds for international biodiversity protection. Such an increase was promised as part of the biodiversity framework agreed in Montreal, and we are eagerly awaiting answers to how countries will fulfill these promises", says Jaeger.
