Goldman Prize 2024
RFN partner Marcel Gomes is awarded the "Nobel Prize for nature"
Brazilian journalist and activist Marcel Gomes is one of the recipients of the Goldman Environmental Prize for his long-standing work on the world's largest meat supplier, JBS, and the company's role in illegal deforestation in the Amazon. The prestigious Goldman Prize is often referred to as the "Nobel Prize for nature".
The Goldman Environmental Prize is awarded to "individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk".
Marcel Gomes (45) receives the award for his work on the world's largest meat supplier, JBS, and the company's violations of social and environmental conditions in their cattle supply chains.
He is the Secretary General of Repórter Brasil, a non-profit media organisation working at the intersection of supply chains, human rights, slave labour and environmental issues. Marcel leads the organisation's investigative and research teams.
Rainforest Foundation Norway is collaborating with Repórter Brasil on two ongoing projects, one on biofuels and one on mining.
Linking JBS to illegal deforestation
Marcel Gomes and Repórter Brasil unearthed detailed evidence linking JBS beef to illegal deforestation in Brazil's most threatened ecosystems.
He co-ordinated an international campaign that used the evidence to pressure global retailers to stop selling the illegal meat.
The campaign led to six major European supermarket chains in Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the UK suspending sales of JBS products indefinitely in December 2021.
Rainforest Foundation Norway congratulates Marcel Gomes
"Rainforest Foundation Norway is delighted with this recognition of Marcel's great efforts for the environment and the rainforest, and congratulates him on this fantastic award," says Toerris Jaeger, Executive Director of Rainforest Foundation Norway
